What are intumescent paint coatings?
An intumescent coating is essentially a specially-formulated paint that expands when it is exposed to fire.
The name comes from the Latin word "intumescere", meaning "to swell".
Under certain conditions this expanded char can become 100 times the dry film thickness.
The thickness of the coating char depends on a number of factors:
- the coating type
- the dry film thickness
- the temperature of the fire surrounding the coated structural member
